High-Strength Bolts in Bolt-Ball Space Frames

Start with the connection system

“High-strength bolt” describes a broad class of fasteners, not a complete installation specification. A bolt used in a threaded ball-node assembly must be considered with the matching node, member-end detail and sleeve arrangement. A general-purpose structural bolt is not automatically a suitable replacement.

Do not transfer tightening rules by analogy

Conventional structural bolting may involve snug-tightened, pretensioned or slip-critical joint requirements. The RCSC specification addresses structural bolted joints within its defined scope. It is not a universal installation manual for every proprietary space-frame node.

Before applying a torque table or inspection method from another source, verify its applicability with the project designer and system supplier. This guide intentionally gives no generic tightening torque, preload value or minimum thread engagement. RCSC specifications and resources.

What should the fastener information identify?

Use the approved parts schedule as the starting point. The procurement and installation documents should make clear which fastener belongs to which connection and which standard or proprietary specification governs it.

Useful questions include the required property designation, dimensions, thread form, manufacturing documentation, coating condition, batch traceability and compatibility with the mating parts. Any installation instruction should identify its scope and revision.

Receiving and handling questions

Keep identification with each batch. Ask how damaged threads, contamination, corrosion, missing components or lost labels are to be handled under the approved quality plan. Do not substitute parts or rework threads simply to make an assembly fit.

When instructions appear inconsistent, record the discrepancy and seek clarification before installation. The cost of resolving a document mismatch early is easier to understand than the consequences of an undocumented field modification.

Inspection must match the specified method

The inspection record should describe what was checked, by whom, using which applicable procedure and against which acceptance criteria. A statement such as “all bolts checked” is less useful than a traceable record tied to member and node identification.

Visual photographs alone cannot prove bolt engagement, mechanical properties or conformity. The responsible project team should determine the inspection and testing requirements; a general knowledge article cannot sign off a connection.
