A material grade is only part of the specification
A complete steel enquiry should identify the product form and relevant standard as well as the grade. Dimensions, delivery condition, toughness requirements, traceability and project-specific acceptance requirements may also be important. Similar-looking grade names from different standards should not be treated as automatic substitutes.
SCI/BCSA's material guidance discusses strength, toughness, ductility, weldability and durability as distinct considerations. It is useful background, not a substitution approval for a particular project. Material properties reference.
Keep product forms separate
Circular hollow sections, spherical node components, cone heads, sleeves and fasteners do not all have the same product specification. A document headed “steel material” is not enough to establish the requirements for every part of a space-frame assembly.
When preparing a bill of materials or procurement enquiry, group parts by their actual function and governing specification. Link each group to the relevant drawing or parts schedule.
Avoid casual grade-equivalence tables
An old article may list grades such as Q235, Q345 or Q355, while an overseas enquiry uses an EN or ASTM designation. Comparing the numbers in those names is not a complete equivalence assessment.
A useful comparison asks which editions and product standards apply, which thickness range and delivery condition are relevant, and what testing or documentation is required. Any proposed substitution must go through the project's approval procedure.
What to request with a tube quotation
Our suggested enquiry checklist is:
- Outside dimensions, wall thickness and required lengths from the approved schedule.
- Product standard, material designation and any specified delivery condition.
- Inspection documents and the traceability expected for each delivery batch.
- Surface condition, protective treatment and packing requirements.
- The method for resolving discrepancies or proposed substitutions.
This is not a complete purchasing standard. The responsible team must define the technical requirements before procurement.
Read the certificate together with the marking
A material document is useful only when it can be connected to the delivered product. Ask how batch references and member identification are maintained through storage, cutting, fabrication and packing.
Do not infer compliance from a painted colour, a manufacturer's logo in a photograph or an unverified catalogue caption. The photographs on this site explain component types; they are not inspection certificates.
Keep quantities and assumptions visible
For an early estimate, record which material assumptions are provisional. The estimate should be revisited when the approved member schedule, coating system and scope become available. A change in grade or delivery requirements should be explicit rather than hidden inside a revised total.
